EMDR is like hypnosis, leaving a cavity of missing negative feeling, but a feeling it was nonetheless. How to instill joy of life in its place? Remove fear, you said. Again, this is a removal of feeling trapped, a good thing in itself but not more than an instillation of hope and support for future action. Respecting and enlarging their 'Purpose' in life may be useful to having an interactive life in a community, you say. So, let us make sure we understand what the person sees as their purpose before removal of a negative emotion/memory. This seems closer to the idea that we can replace a negative feeling with more than a positive direction.
DBT wants the person to have a life worth living. DBT reinforces 'having done your best but now go forth and do better.' I hope it isn't hubris to want to our clients to have more control over their lives, to be happier; that we make more than promises of a better life, such as abound in control cultures.
Going back to recognizing and supporting the client's purpose as an avenue to investigate: Their purpose is related to their Needs. A Need is non-negotiable. What happens if we treat the person in front of us based on their need?
What is analog of REM sleep’s restorative function for creativity? Could we elicit a solution as easily as blurring out a bad one?
