Interventions start with a good case history

A good case history enables a clear focus for all interventions, especially financial interventions, and should include:
1. What the money will be used for.
2. Where else can the money come from?
3. What will be accomplished?
CarefulGiving is a non-profit organization. It is a practical interpretation and foundational support based on the personal practices of the founders of Social Work with a contemporary locus of control. It is a therapeutic instrument in the hands of a skilled clinician. As a protocol and a conduit, it has proven useful with high risk clients who are financially isolated, highly stressed, and often experiencing major depression and panic attacks, but are not actively psychotic.

Clients with a GAF of 11 and above made significant gains in functioning with judicious financial interventions as part of the treatment modality. For many individuals the GAF rose and stabilized in the 61-70 GAF range. This was quite impressive as some of the clients had been suicidal and isolated for over 20 years.

This workshop describes the deleterious effects of poverty on people in general, and, in particular, on clients with mental health issues. Social Workers and other clinicians should be aware of the harm poverty inflicts on their clients and the potential utility that a financial intervention capacity offers.
